2. Is the Election Commissioner elected or appointed?

The Election Commissioner is appointed by the Governor. The Governor appoints Election Commissioners for a four-year term in counties with a population larger than 100,000. Currently, Todd Wiltgen serves as Lancaster County Election Commissioner. His current term ends on September 6, 2023.

3. What qualifications are there for a person to vote in any election?

To vote in elections, persons must be:

• 18 years of age or older on the first Tuesday after first Monday in November
• A citizen of the United States
• A resident of Nebraska
• Not convicted of a felony or if convicted, it has been at least two years since the completion of the sentence for the felony including any parole term
• Not to have been found mentally incompetent

4. Does a person have to go to a voting place in order to cast a vote during any election?

5. What should I do if I have moved since the last election?

Residents may register to vote in person at the Election Commissioner's Office, by mail or online. Voters changing address, name, or party affiliation must re-register. For more information, see the Voter Registration page.

6. How do I change my political party affiliation?

You can change your political party affiliation by completing a new voter registration application and selecting your new affiliation. This can be done online, by mail or in person at the Election Office. For more information visit the Voter Registration page.

7. How can a person find out when the next election will be held?

The next scheduled election is listed on the main page of the Election Commissioner website. Currently, the next scheduled election is the Statewide Primary on May 14, 2024.

8. How can a person find out which offices will be up for election during the next election?

A list of the offices up for election will be posted on the specific election page after the offices are certified by each political subdivision.

9. How can a person file as a candidate for an office during any upcoming election?

Candidates filing for local office will file at the Lancaster County Election Commissioner's Office, located at:

For State offices, candidates file with the Election Division of the Nebraska Secretary of State located at:
